Do you ever feel like simply being yourself isn't enough?
Maybe you feel you have to accomplish more, work harder, take care of everyone else, or prove yourself before you can finally feel good enough.
When self-worth becomes connected to achievement or approval, life can become exhausting.
There is always another expectation to meet.
Would You Expect This From Someone You Love?
Think about someone you deeply care about.
If they were struggling, would you tell them they needed to be perfect before they deserved your love?
Would you expect them to constantly go above and beyond for everyone else at the expense of themselves?
Probably not.
You would likely offer them kindness and remind them that doing their best is enough.
So why is it sometimes so difficult to offer ourselves that same compassion?
Your Worth Doesn't Have to Be Earned
When you have spent years seeking acceptance or approval, proving yourself can become an automatic pattern.
You accomplish something, feel good temporarily, and then find yourself searching for the next thing that will prove you are enough.
But your worth does not increase when someone approves of you, and it does not disappear when someone doesn't.
Other people's opinions can change like the weather.
Your worth doesn't have to change with them.
You Don't Have to Be Perfect
You are going to make mistakes. Sometimes your best will fall short.
That's okay.
You learn. You grow. And your best continues to get better.
Self-confidence isn't about believing you will always get everything right. It is learning that you can be imperfect and still treat yourself with love, kindness, compassion, and understanding.
Sometimes I ask my clients to imagine setting down a heavy backpack filled with expectations, the pressure to perform, please everyone, be perfect, and continually prove their worth.
Imagine how much lighter life could feel without carrying that weight everywhere you go.
You are allowed to be present.
You are allowed to rest.
You are allowed to enjoy your life without constantly performing for approval.
And perhaps most importantly, you can begin offering yourself the same kindness you have been so willing to give everyone else.
You are good enough, just as you are.
